Fermi gases in harmonic oscillator potential traps

چکیده
We study the thermodynamic properties of an ideal gas of fermions in a harmonic oscillator confining potential. The analogy between this problem and the de Haasvan Alphen effect is discussed and used to obtain analytical results for the chemical potential and specific heat in the case of both isotropic and anisotropic potentials. Step-like behaviour in the chemical potential, first noted in numerical studies, is obtained analytically and shown to result in an oscillatory behaviour of the specific heat when the particle number is varied. The origin of these oscillations is that part of the thermodynamic potential responsible for the de Haas-van Alphen-type effect. At low temperatures we show analytically that there are significant deviations in the specific heat from the expected linear temperature dependence, again as a consequence of the de Haas-van Alphen part of the thermodynamic potential. Results are given for one, two, and three spatial dimensions. In the anisotropic case we show how the specific heat jumps as the ratio of oscillator frequencies varies.

Transport of a quantum degenerate heteronuclear Bose-Fermi mixture in a harmonic trap
We report on the simultaneous transport of mixed quantum degenerate gases of bosonic Rb and fermionic K in a harmonic potential. The samples are transported over a distance of 6 mm to the geometric center of a Ioffe-Pritchard type magnetic trap. This transport mechanism was implemented by modification of the QUIC trap and is free of losses and heating. It significantly extends the capabilities ...
متن کاملQuasi two-dimensional superfluid Fermi gases
We study a quasi two-dimensional superfluid Fermi gas where the confinement in the third direction is due to a strong harmonic trapping. We investigate the behavior of such a system when the chemical potential is varied and find strong modifications of the superfluid properties due to the discrete harmonic oscillator states. We show that such quasi two-dimensional behavior can be created and ob...
متن کاملTrapped Fermi gases
Trapped degenerate atomic gases provide exciting opportunities for the manipulation and quantitative study of quantum statistical effects, such as the strikingly direct observation of Bose-Einstein condensation @1–3#. Although perhaps not as dramatic as the phase transition associated with bosons, the behavior of trapped Fermi gases also merits attention, both as a degenerate quantum system in ...
متن کاملDegenerate Quantum Gases and Bose-einstein Condensation
After a brief historical introduction to Bose-Einstein condensation and Fermi degeneracy, we discuss theoretical results we have recentely obtained for trapped degenerate quantum gases by means of a thermal field theory approach. In particular, by using Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-Popov equations, we consider thermodynamical properties of two Bosonic systems: a gas of Lithium atoms and a ga...
متن کاملA basis-set based Fortran program to solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for dilute Bose gases in harmonic and anharmonic traps
Inhomogeneous boson systems, such as the dilute gases of integral spin atoms in low-temperature magnetic traps, are believed to be well described by the Gross–Pitaevskii equation (GPE). GPE is a nonlinear Schrödinger equation which describes the order parameter of such systems at the mean field level. In the present work, we describe a Fortran 90 computer program developed by us, which solves t...
